PUBLIC SAFETY AROUND FLOOD WATERS

Members of the public are reminded not to enter flood waters owing to the likelihood of hidden physical hazzards including contaminants.  Children in particular are warned not to enter stormwater drainage systems due to strong suction and entrapment during flooding/storms.

CLEANING UP FLOODED HOMES/BUSINESSES

Be aware that flood water may contain sewage or other possible harmful contaminants.  Protect yourself and your family by following these steps:

  • Keep children and pets out of the affected area until cleanup has been completed;
  • If possible, wear rubber boots and rubber gloves during cleanup of affected area;
  • Remove and discard items that cannot be washed and disinfected (such as mattresses, carpeting, carpet padding, rugs, upholstered furniture, cosmetics, stuffed animals, baby toys, pillows, foam-rubber items, books, wall coverings, and most paper products);
  • Thoroughly clean all hard surfaces (such as flooring, concrete, molding, wood and metal furniture, countertops, appliances, sinks, and other plumbing fixtures) and then sanitise with disinfectant;
  • After completing the cleanup, thoroughly wash and disinfect your hands;
  • Wash all clothes worn during the cleanup in hot water and detergent.  These clothes should be washed separately from uncontaminated clothes and linens; and
  • Seek immediate medical attention if you become injured or ill.
