Newsletter

Welcome to the SEPTEMBER 2011 edition.

Winter has ended and spring is upon us.  Can I say what a relief it is to look forward to some mild sunny days.

This year has not been the best for some residents and flood recovery is still slow for most affected by the January floods, but the signs of recovery are building momentum with more and more homes being repaired and re-occupied.

I would like to thank all businesses and residents who donated to the Mayor's Flood Appeal.  Through this appeal residents who were flood affected have received 2 x $500.00 vouchers.  If you were flood affected and have not received the vouchers please contact Division 4 Office on 3816 2444 for a "Help Us Help You" form.

I will be holding my next round of Community Meetings in October and would love to see you at one of them, so mark the date and time in your calendar.

New Meters for CBD

From 15 September Council will introduce new solar powered parking meters for the CBD.  These new meters will cover around 650 parking bays and include new areas i.e. around Pring Street.

Council's old meters were beyond economic repair with most unserviceable. The cost to park in the CBD is $1.00 per hour, with 1 to 4 hour bays available.  This is up from the existing 80 cents per hour for inner city parking which has not been amended for some years.

New Australian Disability
Parking Permits  - ADPP

The ADPP provides permit holders with a universal permit design recognised in every state of Australia.

Motorists issued with an ADPP are entitled to:

  • Park in any space provided for a person with a disability in an on-street or off-street parking location.
  • Park in local government metered or regulated parking areas free of charge for the following periods:

- where the time limit specified by a sign is less than 30 minutes, permit holders are allowed to park for up to 30 minutes,

- where the time limit specified by a sign is 30 minutes or more, permit holders are allowed to park for an unlimited amount of time.

The Queensland Blue disability parking permit is no longer valid and those who use it may incur a fine.

Queensland Disability Parking Permit (Red Permit) holders are entitled to park in disability parking bays in off street locations only.

The Department of Transport and Main Roads is responsible for the administration of Disability Parking Permits. For further information, please contact the Department of Transport and Main Roads on 132 380 or visit:

Council has included a Kerbside Cleanup in its 2011/12 budget.

Rather than a city-wide pickup over a few weeks, it will be organised on a suburb by suburb basis over the course of the year.

Further information will be available once the program commences.

KSB & Thoroughclean have recently completed the construction of their new facilities at Citiswich Business Park and are now fully operational. They join Caltex, API, The Reject Shop and Capral Aluminium in Stage 1 of the $1billion estate.

KSB, one of the world's leading manufacturers of pumps, valves and related systems for water management, purpose built an ultra-modern 2,000sqm facility on a 7,800sqm site to accommodate new state of the art marchinery and house their water + waste water centre nationally.  KSB relocated from Sumner Park, with their new premises accommodating future expansion space to align with their growth plans.

Thoroughclean, a manufacturer of industrial high pressure water cleaners expanded their operation into a 2,000sqm purpose designed facility on Ashburn Road. One of the major attractions for Thoroughclean's investment in the area was the unmatched access to the national highway network, high quality estate presentation and the pro-active approach taken by Ipswich City Council.

Citiswich is taking off as an important business destination in SEQ, highlighted by these two recent developments and continued strong enquiry levels. Watch this space for new commitments to be announced shortly!

IPSWICH CBD

BELL STREET, IPSWICH will soon undergo a billion dollar redevelopment.  Ipswich City Council set up Ipswich City Properties to purchase the site in 2009, and Leighton Properties has been selected as the project's development partner. This building will be 4 - 5 star energy rated.

A 10 story commercial office tower is stage one of the CBD redevelopment and work is expected to start in December 2011.

Other stages will include residential apartments, an entertainment precinct and major retail space.

Other work being carried out as part of the Bell Street re-development will include replacement of the existing footpath with coloured concrete, replacement of existing kerb and channel, increasing the number of bus stops, improving the safety and amenity of the precinct through improved lighting and increased security cameras.

Trevor believes that this work will improve the accessibility to the central business district shopping precinct not only for vehicles but for buses carrying passengers into the city.

These works will also will make the Bell Street transit vicinity a safer place for all commuters, with improved facilities, lighting and shelter.

COLES are building its biggest Australian supermarket in Ipswich next year in Limestone Street, Ipswich. Their  current Limestone Street store has not operated since the January floods this year.

To mitigate against any future flooding, plans have the ground level set for parking with the supermarket itself to be above flood level.  It is anticipated that there will be 370 car parks included in this redevelopment.

Ipswich City Council and residents of Ipswich were very grateful to Coles for allowing the use of this building for a Flood Distribution Centre over the past six months.
