Ipswich City CouncilMedia ReleaseUQ partnership for community well-being 5 March 2008 IPSWICH City Council is investigating a partnership with the Healthy Communities Research Centre at the University of Queensland. Health and Regulation Committee Chairperson Councillor Andrew Antoniolli said Council identified in its Corporate Plan and Ipswich 2020 and Beyond the strategic priority of Community Spirit and Wellbeing and the specific goal of a Healthy Community. "As late as December last year Council also endorsed the development of a whole of community Active and Healthy Lifestyles Strategy. "This partnership is being investigated to support these priorities and commitments. "The Research Centre is a joint venture between the Ipswich Hospital Foundation and The University of Queensland, initially for a five year period. "Its mission is to conduct research that builds knowledge about healthy communities, their development and sustainability to enhance the capability of government, private and non-government organisations to support community health and well being." Cr Antoniolli said two partnership arrangements were currently being considered, a short term contract on specific health related topics and an ongoing partnership on ways to determine community health and well being at the local government level. "A research proposal is being prepared for the latter proposal. "It is hoped a partnership between the Healthy Communities Research Centre and Ipswich City Council would benefit the community. "Such a partnership would support Council's priorities and commitments as outlined in the Corporate Plan, Ipswich 2020 and Beyond and the Active and Healthy Lifestyles Ipswich Strategy. "Discussions regarding the research project will continue with the Healthy Communities Research Centre until an agreement is reached and a further report to Council will be provided once a formal proposal has been developed," Cr Antoniolli said.
