Ipswich named world's most liveable mid-size city

27 November 2007

IT'S official - Ipswich is now the most liveable mid-size city in the world, as awarded by an international panel made up of different cultures and ideas united by the single goal of making the environment where people live better.

This year celebrated the 10th anniversary of the full running of The International Awards for Liveable Communities, initially piloted in Spain in 1996.

Ipswich Mayor Paul Pisasale said it was a tremendous achievement for everyone who had worked so hard to lift the performance and image of the city.

"This award recognises that as a city we have embraced the future, yet respect our past," Cr Pisasale said.

"To win this prestigious award in London means that no one can ever again doubt the attributes of our wonderful city.

"We are the ‘little engine that could' and we will continue to work on correcting outdated perceptions of our proud city," Cr Pisasale said.

Deputy Mayor Victor Attwood was in London to accept the award on November 25 (London time) at a special ceremony to mark the 2007 Livcom Awards for Liveable Communities.

"This is one of the proudest moment of my life accepting this award in front of an international audience," Cr Attwood said.

"The competition was tough, however Ipswich has a story that is the envy of many other cities around the world.

"We have seen a marvellous transformation take place in Ipswich.  Last year, the city scored the sixth largest increase in population of any local government area in Australia.

"We must keep the pressure on to maintain and improve standards as the city grows.

"This award now gives us a benchmark and we must do our utmost to continue to improve our liveability," Cr Attwood said.

Ipswich scored the win in Category C for cities with a population between 75,001 - 200,000, from a field of eight other cities around the world.
