Safe Work Australia Week encouraged by Council

19 October 2009

EMPLOYEES from Ipswich City Council are being encouraged to be safe and stay safe as part of activities for Safe Work Australia Week.

Mayor Paul Pisasale said Safe Work Australia Week, to run from October 25 to 31, would remind organisations that safety in the workplace should be a priority.

"The most important reason for making your workplace safe, is not at work at all. Just one little slip at work could have a major impact on your life, your family and your friends.

"We are encouraging all of the people in our workforce to watch out for one another, not just in Safe Work Australia Week, but all of the time.

"Our Workplace Health and Safety Team will speak with all 1500 council employees to help build a positive safety culture."

Cr Pisasale said council's Workplace Health and Safety Unit would join forces with Workplace Health and Safety Queensland throughout the week to reinforce the safety message.

"We want to increase awareness of the need to be especially attentive and safety conscious at work.

"The teams will be visiting Ipswich City Council Depots and Administration buildings to host a series of meetings throughout Safe Work Week.

"Every year approximately 100 people die and 30,000 Queenslanders are seriously injured at work and every week an average of 577 Queensland workers suffer a serious work-related injury or disease.

"Work-related injury and illness can be prevented through the adoption of safer work practices, we just have to adopt and maintain the safety first message," Cr Pisasale said.
