Nerima Tea House starts to take shape

19 October 2009

The Japanese Tea House under construction in Nerima Gardens at Queens Park, Ipswich will be the first traditional Japanese Tea House to be built in Queensland.

Mayor Paul Pisasale said the Tea House was designed by Imperial Gardens Landscaping using the traditional Japanese Tea House design.

"Nerima Gardens and this new Tea House to celebrate 15 years of our Sister City relationship with Nerima, Tokyo, Japan will be a lasting legacy to the goodwill between our cities.

"The size of traditional structures in Japan are measured by Tatami mat and this structure will be eight Tatami mats.

"Although it will have  some custom features, such as use of local ironbark timbers  for protection against white ants, the Nerima Gardens Tea House will have the traditional internal Shoji screens and standard Japanese Tea House items within the walls."

Parks, Sport and Recreation Committee Chairperson, Councillor David Morrison said Nerima Gardens followed traditional Japanese designs.

"Where the traditional tea house in Japan has exterior rice paper walls, the Nerima Gardens facility will have timber exterior walls with glass and timber sliding doors for general security. Traditional rice paper walls will feature inside the structure."

Nerima Gardens Tea House will be officially opened by Mayor Paul Pisasale in partnership with Nerima Mayor Toshiro Shimura and celebrated with a traditional tea ceremony on November 12 this year.
