Tunstall Place named after former councillor

27 October 2009

BRASSALL will have a new street to be constructed in a new development at the bottom of Workshops Street.

Division 6 Councillor Cheryl Bromage said the new street would be named Tunstall Place after Thomas Ousman Tunstall who lived more than half his life in Ipswich in the early 20th Century.

Cr Bromage said a submission was received from Nolimit Property Development and the name Tunstall Place was considered suitable and approved last month.

"Thomas Ousman Tunstall was born on November 21, 1868  at Fenton Stoke-on-Trent, England and died on August 2, 1939 in Ipswich, Queensland.

"He was married to Margaret Hannah Colthup on July 13, 1891 and served on the Ipswich City Council from 1933 to 1939."

Cr Bromage said Thomas Tunstall lived at 39 Omar Street West Ipswich.

"He was a Member of the Ipswich Show Society and Vice President from 1922 to 1923 then again in 1927, and 1934, through to 1939.

"He was very fond of dogs and horses an, in fact had the dog pavilion at the Showgrounds named in his honour."

Mr Tunstall's grand daughter, Margaret Boulter, said she was extremely proud that Council decided to name a street in memory of her grandfather.

Mrs Boulter, worked at Ipswich Hospital for 45 years as a nurse and later nurse educator.

Thomas Tunstall was also secretary/treasurer of the Ipswich Baptist Church and worked for many years with South British Insurance.
