Ipswich City CouncilMedia ReleaseCivic Centre to get the blues 27 October 2009 MANY iconic buildings in Queensland are turning blue in November, including our own Civic Centre, to raise awareness of diabetes. Arts Community and Cultural Services Committee Chairperson, Councillor Charlie Pisasale said the Civic Centre, which has just undergone a re-branding would turn blue on Saturday November 14 to mark World Diabetes Day. "Diabetes is growing at an epidemic rate across Queensland, with more than 50 Queenslanders diagnosed with diabetes every day. Already more than 250,000 Queenslanders have the condition and a staggering two million Queensland adults are at increased risk of diabetes. "Not many people think diabetes is serious, but worldwide, diabetes is a leading cause of blindness, kidney failure, heart attack, stroke and amputation. "The number of people living with diabetes has increased considerably over the past 30 years. In 1985, an estimated 30 million people worldwide had diabetes. Today, the figure exceeds 250 million and it is set to reach 380 million by 2025." Cr Pisasale said 1107 world landmarks and buildings were lit blue last year to mark World Diabetes Day around the world, including 23 in Queensland. "We hope by doing our part in Ipswich we help the cause. "The Civic Centre now has an elaborate lighting system which allows us to bathe the building in any colour we like. "On November 14 we have the Natalie Yates Dance School concert at the Civic Centre whose cast and audience will be greeted by the building in blue." -ENDS-
