Library access improved with the launch of new mobile library stop at Yamanto

28 October 2009

A NEW mobile library schedule was  launched today in Yamanto in response to a review of the mobile library service by Ipswich City Council.

Tourism and Libraries Committee Chairperson Councillor David Pahlke and Division 8 Councillor Charlie Pisasale launched a new stop at the Yamanto Shopping Centre as part of the schedule upgrade.

Cr Pahlke said the mobile library provided valuable access for those residents who were unable to travel to the Ipswich, Redbank Plains and Redbank Plaza library branches.

"The mobile library ensures that as many people as possible have access to the Ipswich Library and Information Service," Cr Pahlke said.

"Currently the mobile library visits 14 locations in Ipswich including Willowbank, Grandchester, Karalee, Marburg and Rosewood, Booval, Camira, Springfield, Goodna and Brassall.

"Conducting a review of the mobile library service helps to ensure that council is providing a service to residents that meets current needs.

"It was clear from the recent review of the mobile library service that user needs had changed and so alterations to the schedule are being made."

Cr Pisasale said he welcomed the Yamanto area gaining one of the city's two new mobile library stops and encouraged local residents to embrace the new facility.

"The library will now visit Yamanto every second Wednesday and will be located just inside the Woolworths carpark," he said.

"I'm sure the community and library patrons will be enthusiastic about this new stop and will enjoy being able to combine their shopping trip with a visit to the library.

"Ipswich's mobile library is basically a library on wheels which provides patrons with access via satellite technology to the full range of services available from the Ipswich Library and Information Service including real-time access to the library's circulation system, catalogues and internet.

"It provides all the convenience of the library in a community friendly location."

Ipswich's mobile library is almost 18 metres long and carries about 6500 items at any time including books, magazines, DVDs, CDs and CD-ROMs.

The mobile library delivers 21 services to sites throughout Ipswich and welcomes more than 4000 visitors each month.

Today's launch of the new Yamanto site included competitions with prizes and a range of activities such as storytelling and face painting.
