Ipswich City CouncilMedia ReleaseNational Recycling Week to be celebrated at Ipswich swap party 20 October 2009 IPSWICH residents can swap their unwanted household items for new treasures at The Big Ipswich Swap Party on November 14 as part of the National Recycling Week 2009 events hosted by Ipswich City Council and Ipswich Waste Services. City Works Committee Chairperson Councillor Trevor Nardi said that recycling and reducing waste usually sent landfill was the key message of National Recycling Week At this free event, residents are given the opportunity to swap up to five unwanted items from home for items brought along by other people. "The Big Ipswich Swap Party is a great way for the community to get involved with reusing and recycling," Cr Nardi said. "Good quality items that are no longer required but are suitable to swap can be brought along to the Ipswich Showgrounds from 9am to 12pm on November 14. "Items are then exchanged for tokens and these tokens can be swapped for other items. "It's a great way to pass on things that are still in good condition, but are not needed anymore. "It's tempting just to put unwanted but still useful items in the bin, but that means they just end up in landfill. This then has implications for council, the community and the environment. "Swapping items also means a reduced demand for natural resources that would have been used in the production of new items." The Big Ipswich Swap Party will include a range of other activities such as:
Any good quality items remaining at the end of the Swap Party will be given to Lifeline. Ipswich Waste Services has secured media identity and environmental advocate Stacey Thomson (better known as Ranger Stacey from Totally Wild on Network Ten) as MC for the event.
