30 October 2009

HIGH achievers in sport in Ipswich were recognised with the first quarter Ipswich Sport Achiever Awards held at the Metro International Hotel this morning.

Parks, Sport and Recreation Committee Chairperson, Councillor David Morrison said the winners had already received recognition awards.

"Junior Sport Achiever Awards went to swimmer Leah Neale (July), cyclist Thomas Richards (August) and trampolining competitor Samantha Dennehy (September).

"Leah received a Junior Sport Recognition Award in July for representing Australia in the Trans Tasman Series for swimming.

"It is amazing to think Leah, who is just 13, competed in 10 events  including the 400m individual medley, 800m freestyle 200m freestyle and relays.

"Leah is on of the youngest members in the Australian Youth Team for swimming and is one of a select group chosen to attend two elite training camps at the Australian Institute of Sport."

Cr Morrison said Thomas Richards received his Junior Sports Recognition Award for his selection in the Australian Junior Road Team to represent Australia at the Junior World Cycling Championships.

"Thomas has represented Queensland and Australia on a number of occasions and his name is sure to continue to come up in elite competition in years to come.

"Samantha Dennehy has only been involved in trampolining for four years and has represented Queensland in the Australian Championships for three of those years.

"She was last year placed second in the Australian Trampolining Championships, first in the Synchronised competition and third in the Open Aged Competition."

Cr Morrison said Ali Brigginshaw received a Senior Sports Recognition Award in July for her selection in the Queensland Open Women's Rugby League team who played against New South Wales for the Nellie Doherty Cup.

"Ali's family has a proud history in the sport and she was pleased to follow in the footsteps of her grandfather who played for Queensland in 1949 and her father who represented the State in 1979 and is a deserved winner of the Senior Sport Achievers Award for July."

Cr Morrison said Ipswich squash player Sunil Seth received a Senior Sports Recognition Award n

September for being selected to represent Queensland at the Australian Squash Championships.

"It is great to see someone excel in their sports and Ali and Senil are deserving winners for the July and September Senior Sport Achiever Awards.

"We are witnessing some magnificent sporting achievements from our sportsmen and women in Ipswich and I would not be surprised to see more people from here in the international arena in years to come.

"It is great to know Ipswich City Council along with sponsors like Ipswich Metro International Hotel, Nugrow Landscape Soils and Troy Buyers from South West Sports Promotion can assist them  along the way with these Sports Awards."
