Senior sports people urged to apply for awards

6 November 2009

IPSWICH City Council is looking for senior people who are good at sport who may be eligible to win more than their own competition.

Parks, Sport and Recreation Committee Chairperson, Councillor David Morrison said the Ipswich Sports Awards program provided monthly junior and senior Sport Recognition Awards as a reward for excellence in sport.

"The Senior Sport Recognition Awards of $200 and $300 are available each month for Ipswich athletes 19 years and over who have been selected to compete at national or international events.

"There are quite a few award programs out there for junior sports people, but there is still very little help available for senior sports people.

"The Ipswich Sports Awards program is one of the few, if not the only, one in Australia to provide this kind of award to senior sports people."

Cr Morrison said applicants must be Ipswich residents, an amateur sportsperson and have been selected to compete at a national or international sporting event.

"The awards are available every month and all you need do to apply is to submit an application form during the month of your sporting event.

"If you or someone you know is a senior sports person please tell them about the Ipswich Sports Awards as they could go on to win one of the monthly awards of $200 or $300 or an annual award of up to $4000 for their efforts in carrying the Ipswich name to their events."

Application forms and more information are available at www.ipswich.qld.gov.au or 07-3810 6666.
