Conservation Partnerships on Private Land

The variety of partnership initiatives available from Council has been designed to provide different types of information and support to suit the requirements of individual landholders and properties. They are designed to allow Council to assist landholders to protect natural values on their property.

Land for Wildlife (LFW)

This is a voluntary scheme that aims to encourage and assist private landholders to provide habitat for wildlife on their property, even though the property may be managed primarily for other purposes. The scheme is free, voluntary and non-legally binding. Registered landholders receive technical advice from the local Conservation Support Officer, a Land for Wildlife sign, management notes, a quarterly Land for Wildlife newsletter and 50 free plants from Council's Free Plant Program and annual inspections by the Conservation Support Officer. Field days, workshops and forums are also organised for interested Land for Wildlife landholders. Voluntary Conservation Agreements (VCA)

VCAs are cooperative agreements between a landholder and Council. They provide both financial and technical support to assist landholders in the management of privately owned bushland and other natural features outside of Council's parks and reserves or other government reserves.

Three different levels of Voluntary Conservation Agreement exist to suit the requirements of individual landholders and properties. All agreements are voluntary and do not restrict future sale of land. Support is available in the form of an annual Land Management Payment, material support with weed control and other on ground works. Nature Conservation Agreement

Available to private landholders in the Conservation or Rural E (Special Land Management) Zone with large blocks of high conservation value

Partnering Agreement

Available to private landholders in the Conservation Zone or Rural E (Special Land Management) Zone.

Vegetation Retention Agreement

Available to private landholders in other zonings (eg Residential) with vegetation of high conservation value

Environmental Weed Control Rebate

This rebate program aims to assist land owners in the control of environmental weeds. A 50% rebate for the cost of environmental weed control up to $400 per financial year, is available. Approved works on private land include the purchase of herbicide, contract labour to poison, fell and chip priority environmental weeds. Declared weeds are not eligible for the program. Free Plant Program

The Free Plant Program has been operating for a number of years and is continuing to grow annually. Entitlements include:

8 plants per year for urban landowners;
25 plants per year for schools and community groups, river blocks or properties over 4 hectares;
50 plants for Land for Wildlife members; and
100 plants per year for registered primary producers and Voluntary Conservation Agreement landholders.
