Environmental Weeds

An environmental weed can be defined as an exotic or even an Australian native plant species growing outside it's natural range or distribution.  Environmental weeds have the ability to invade our bushland areas and potentially alter the structure of that community.  Weeds in general are also defined simply as a plant growing in the wrong place at the wrong time.

The existence of environmental weeds is one of the most important issues in the on-going protection and management of Ipswich City's natural resources.  Environmental weeds can interfere with the conservation, management, use and enjoyment of our bushland areas.

Ipswich City Council is committed to weed management and is actively involved in the control of environmental and declared weeds throughout the City.

Ipswich City Council has an Environmental Weed Control Rebate (EWCR) to assist private land owners to control environmental weeds on their property.  The rebate does not cover state declared class 1 or 2 weeds.

Environmental Weed Control Rebate

What is the Environmental Weed Control Rebate (EWCR)?

The EWCR provides a financial incentive to control environmental weeds on their property.  The rebate is funded through the Ipswich Enviroplan.

How much is the Rebate?

The maximum rebate available to Ipswich residents is $600 per financial year, per rates assessment number.

Council's Conservation Partnership holders are eligible for higher rebates, as outlined below.

Partnership Program Maximum Rebate
(per financial year)
Nature Conservation Partner  $1000
Bushland Conservation Partner $1000
Waterways & Nature Corridor Partner $800
Land for Wildlife Partner $800
Habitat Gardens Partner $800

If approved the rebate covers 50% costs of contractor works or herbicide purchase, up to your maximum eligible rebate amount.

A 100% rebate is also available for the purchase of herbicide to control environmental weeds on Council land adjoining your property.

Rebate Examples:

  • An Ipswich land owner is approved for contractor works costing $1,100, the rebate will cover $550 costs.  Leaving $50 EWCR remaining for the financial year.
  • A Bushland Partnership land owner is approved for a $380 purchase of herbicide, the rebate will be $190.  Leaving $810 EWCR remaining for the financial year.

Works considered to be harmful to surrounding native vegetation will not be approved.

The rebate is subject to funding availability and may become unavailable before the end of the financial year.
