It has secured accelerated rollout of high speed fibre optic broadband by the National Broadband Network Company (NBN Co), with the network being built throughout 2012 and onwards.
Ipswich awarded as a Smart 21 Intelligent Community for 2012
The cities honoured in the Smart21 2012 include four communities from Europe, 10 from North America, three from Latin America, and four from Asia. This year one other Australian City joined Ipswich on the list. Of the 2012 list, 10 appeared among the Smart21 before, which is typical of the ICF's awards programs, as communities continue to demonstrate progress in their quest to be named Intelligent Community of the Year. Digital Economy InitiativesIpswich has held forums on various aspects of the impacts and opportunities of the digital economy for the city. NBN Business, Jobs and Skills Development in the Digital Economy Forum In June 2011, over 120 local business representatives attended a forum to discuss direct opportunities for supply chain networks in relation to the NBN rollout. Additional opportunities for support services in the Digital Economy were also analysed including manufacturing, administration, logistics, distribution, transport and ICT industries. This has ensured local business can benefit from the local implementation of the National Broadband Network, creating jobs and strengthening of the Ipswich economy. Ipswich Telecommunications Training & Skilling Symposium In May 2011, Ipswich City Council hosted the City's first Telecommunications Training & Skilling Symposium to discuss the significant opportunities for a highly developed and skilled knowledge workforce to successfully and seamlessly implement and maintain the National broadband Network Infrastructure being rolled out in the City. This event was attended by over 80 local business leaders and government representatives. Ipswich City Digital Economy ForumCouncil recently hosted a Digital Economy forum for Ipswich City which obtained community input regarding the importance of access to high speed broadband infrastructure and information and communications technologies for the business, health, education and community services sectors of Ipswich. Ipswich awarded as a Smart 21 Intelligent Community for 2011
The naming of the 21 finalists is the first step in finding the world's most intelligent community. The final seven were chosen in January with the final winner announced in June 2011 at ICF's Building the Broadband Economy Summit. In announcing the 21 finalists ICF co-founder Louis Zacharilla said "this year's Smart21 are using educational networks and universities - both physical and virtual ones - in more innovative ways." Indicative Broadband Coverage & Blackspots Map for IpswichCouncil has recently developed an indicative broadband coverage & blackspots map across the entire Ipswich City Council area and is now available to download.
High Speed Broadband Infrastructure Investment OpportunitiesIpswich City Council plans to lead the way in driving the investment opportunities for high speed broadband infrastructure within Ipswich and the Western Corridor region. The application of digital initiatives over high speed broadband will support creative communities and provide hubs for new digital content, ideas and innovation.
Ipswich and the Western Corridor region is the location for next generation broadband investment.
