Resource Recovery Facility

Since July 2005, Ipswich Waste Services has been operating a Resource Recovery Facility at its Briggs Road depot in Ipswich. This facility promotes resource recovery by recycling waste beverage containers and recovering the liquid content for composting purposes, with absolutely no waste going to landfill from the process.

Cost Effective Environmental Management of Packaging Waste

Ipswich Waste Services Resource Recovery Facility can assist your company in implementing successful product stewardship policies and practices that help to minimise the environmental impacts of packaging in a cost effective manner. This opportunity will help your company to develop sustainable waste management practices and meet the targets set down by the National Packaging Covenant (NPC).

The NPC is the voluntary component of a co-regulatory arrangement for managing the environmental impacts of consumer packaging in Australia. It is an agreement based on the principles of shared responsibility through product stewardship, between key stakeholders in the packaging supply chain and all spheres of government. The regulatory underpinning is provided by the National Environmental Protection Measure (NEPM).

The Covenant is designed to minimise the environmental impacts arising from the disposal of used packaging, conserve resources through better design and production processes and facilitate the reuse and recycling of used packaging materials. The Covenant commits signatories to a national recycling target of 65% for packaging and no further increases in packaging waste disposed to landfill by the end of 2010.

The National Packaging Covenant encourages a co-operative approach between industry and government bodies in order to achieve a national consistency in the lifecycle management of packaging and paper and the implementation of sustainable material recovery systems.

Resource Recovery Facility Capability
The system can process the following packaging containing alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverage:
· Aluminium
· Glass
· Plastic/ PET
· TetraPak

We also bale the cardboard packaging and shrink wrap for resale.  The product processed by our Resource Recovery Facility requires destruction either because the stock is out-of-date or due to production errors.

The process:
· Goods are delivered to our Briggs Road depot and securely stored in a Goods Receival Storage Facility.
· Cartons are broken open and the beverage containers are placed on a conveyor belt. The cardboard cartons and shrink wrap are placed into separate bins.
· The beverage containers are shredded or crushed.
· The liquid contents from the containers are filtered into one of two 22 500 litre capacity storage tanks.
· The shredded beverage containers are baled and stored ready for resale.
· Cardboard cartons and shrink wrap are baled separately for resale.
· All packaging materials are then finally forwarded to markets for recycling.

We guarantee total destruction of the product with stringent security and tracking measures in place to ensure that all product that arrives at our facility is processed.

The Results:
Since July 2005, the facility has:
· Removed 2 million litres of liquid for composting purposes.
· Recovered 150 tonnes of glass, aluminium and PET for end markets both in Australia and overseas
· Processed over quarter of a million cartons of beverage.

This is the only facility of its kind in Queensland!
