Community Engagement

Why engage?

The Ipswich City Council strives to involve Ipswich residents in council's planning and implementation processes.  Our Community Engagement Policy is informed by the 2009 Local Government Act whose principles include "democratic representation, social inclusion and meaningful community engagement".   The Community Engagement Policy aims to guide council's engagement processes towards transparency, consistency and quality practice.  The policy is available below:

What we have done so far

  • The Community Plan

As a lead on to the Ipswich I2020, council invited residents to review the final draft of our recently adopted Long-term Community Plan (now known as Community Plan).  The Plan reflects council's strategies and actions in realising its residents' aspirations through partnership approaches with local agencies.

  • Recent community consultations

Both the Community Development and Marketing Branches, with the assistance of an external consultant, recently consulted with a sample of diverse community groups, residents and other government departments as a means of gaining community input into the development of several Council social infrastructure, crime prevention and city marketing initiatives. A small sample of residents from Toowoomba and Brisbane, were also invited to participate.

Findings from the community consultations have been utilised to inform the development of the following Council Corporate Plan Projects:

  • Community Social Plan
  • Social Infrastructure Plan
  • Crime Prevention Plan
  • City of Ipswich Marketing Plan

Invitation

The Community Development Branch would like invite key members of the Ipswich community to participate in our 2011- 2012 Ipswich Social Plan Reference Group.  We are looking for a wide group of people who are able and willing to meet three or four times over the next 12 months. The Reference Group will provide the social planning team with comments and ideas that will ensure the social plan is properly grounded in the experience of the various communities the social plan is meant to serve. The Social Plan serves to:

  • build on the Ipswich Community Plan and assist council with identifying its priorities in the social development arena.
  • provide information and guidance about social trends and community needs to the many government and non-government agencies providing services in the City of Ipswich.
For more information, please contact Felket Kahsay, Ipswich City Council on ph: 07) 3810 7656 or email FKahsay@ipswich.qld.gov.au.
