Community Planning

Community planning (also known as social planning) is the process of investigating and responding to the needs and aspirations of people and communities.  With an emphasis on strategic policy and action, community planning aims to enhance community wellbeing and effectiveness, as a means of contributing to the development of a vibrant and sustainable community.  As a simple distinction with other forms of strategic planning, community planning is generally people-focused, while physical planning is place-focused and corporate planning is organisationally-focused.

For the City of Ipswich, Council seeks to contribute to the needs, aspirations and social wellbeing of the community by providing advice, assistance and project management in the areas of social research, community planning and social policy.

Council community planning occurs in a number of ways, including:

  • Identifying current and emerging social trends and needs in the City;
  • Monitoring and responding to changing demographics in the City and playing an active and lead role in addressing social impacts and issues;
  • Designing, delivering and evaluating projects and programs that address social wellbeing issues in the City;
  • Raising awareness of social issues, social infrastructure (e.g. libraries, community centres) and human services needs of the City; and
  • Promoting social inclusiveness, diversity and equity in Council strategy, project and policy development.
