Community Planning

Community planning (also known as social planning) is about planning to improve the well-being and quality of life in the many communities that make up Ipswich. Community planning is concerned with understanding how our communities are changing and the services, facilities and social networks that are needed to make our communities strong and socially sustainable.

The community planning and research team in Council's Community Development Branch are engaged in a wide range of activities. They include:

  • Undertaking population studies of the City and its communities, using Census data and other information from many sources, so that we can better match our services to the people who live and work here.
  • Producing a range of community profiles and other information that assist community organisations attract funding for projects and services.
  • Identifying social trends that will have an impact on the City and its communities so that we can anticipate the services and facilities we may need in the future.
  • Researching the social needs of particular population groups in the City of Ipswich - youth, seniors, indigenous people and people with a disability for example - and making recommendations to Council, governments and others on how their needs can be addressed.
  • Examining specific social issues that impact on the well-being of our communities - like housing, employment, health and safety - and recommending policies and plans to address them.
  • Working with Council's planners to ensure that our new communities will have the social services and facilities that contemporary communities need to make them good places to live.
  • Developing social infrastructure plans aimed at matching community facilities with the changing make-up of our communities over time.
