Waste

Throughout Australia, there is increasing public concern about the environmental impacts of waste and pollution.  There is growing awareness that society must change its existing patterns of consumption and disposal if it is to progress to a sustainable system of resource use and minimise the impact on the environment.  A critical aspect of any waste minimisation strategy is to inform and educate the community about the issues.  There is an obvious link between an informed and motivated community and the success of waste management initiatives at any level.

Ipswich Waste Services has developed a comprehensive School Environmental Education Program, What a Waste! focusing on the principles of waste minimisation and the 3R's: Reduce, Reuse, Recycle!.  It incorporates lesson plans, resources and fun activities for both primary and secondary year levels, as well as catering for Prep, Childcare Centres, Kindergartens and Special Education Units.  This program is offered free of charge to all Ipswich schools.

The overall aim is to encourage each school in Ipswich to participate in the program and adopt a whole-of-school approach to waste minimisation, encouraging every student and teacher to join in and take responsiblity.

The program is designed to complement the existing school curriculum and can be incorporated into a range of subject areas such as Environmental Science, Social Studies, Health, Geography, History, Maths, English and even Art!
