Management of Public Intoxication Program

The Ipswich Management of Public Intoxication Program is a State Government initiative, which has three discrete objectives. These are to:

  • Reduce the risk of physical and psychological harm to persons who are intoxicated and in public spaces.
  • Reduce the number of persons who are intoxicated and in public spaces.
  • Build the capacity of the community to reduce the adverse effect of public intoxication.

The Ipswich Management of Public Intoxication Program (IMPIP) initiative is administered by the Department of Economic and Community Development (E&CD), Community Development Branch, funded by the Queensland Department of Communities. IMPIP is aimed at addressing alcohol, drugs and volatile substance abuse of 12-25 year old persons in public spaces, within the Ipswich Central Business District (CBD) area.

The Management of Public Intoxication Program was developed in conjunction with the Queensland State Government's commitment to an integrated response to public intoxication within the Ipswich region.

The objectives of the Ipswich Management of Public Intoxication Program are:

  • To reduce the risk of physical and psychological harm to persons who are intoxicated and in public spaces and to reduce the number of persons who are intoxicated in public spaces; and
  • To build the capacity of the community to reduce the adverse effect of public intoxication.

The outcomes include:

  • Community and industry sectors are better informed about issues affecting individuals, families and community groups;
  • Appropriate support services are delivered to meet the needs of individuals, families and community groups.

Key strategies were developed to respond to the IMPIP priority areas. Those strategies included the provision for:

  • Strategy One: Parent and Extended Family Awareness Training to raise awareness of the health risks of drug, alcohol and inhalant misuse
  • Strategy Two: Community Awareness Training to improve responsiveness of Service Providers in the Ipswich region in the delivery of intervention, prevention and support programs
  • Strategy Three: Information Resources to provide contact details of Agencies who could assist parents and families
  • Strategy Four: Peer Initiative Activities to build leadership and responsibility of young persons who are at risk.
  • Strategy Five: Provision of Street Outreach Patrols.
