Seniors

Seniors in CafeIt has been projected that the Australian population will age substantially, and surprising quickly, over the coming decades (Australian Local Government Association 2004). The proportion of people aged over 65 years in Australia is anticipated to grow from 13% as at June 2002, to 25% of the population by 2051. These implications are evident at a local level. Projections from 2004 anticipate that by 2026, 19.9% of the Ipswich City population will be aged over 65 years of age in comparison to 9.3% in 2001. This compares to an anticipated Queensland average of 20% in 2026 and 11.6% of the population in 2001 (Planning Information and Forecasting Unit 2004).

Ipswich City Council is committed to enhancing the quality of life of our older citizens. This requires knowledge within the community of the needs and issues of older people. It requires that the community considers its attitudes to older people and that the community values the worth and contribution of our senior citizens.

Ipswich City Council embraces the following principles:

  • Promote positive community attitudes towards and acceptance of older people and their right to independence, self-determination, dignity and choice.
  • Value the skills, resources and diversity of older people and provide older people with an opportunity to grow to their fullest capacity and make a life long contribution to the community.
  • Provide access to appropriate information, employment, training, learning, housing, transport, cultural, recreational, safety, security and care services that are appropriate to the diverse needs of older people.
  • Encourage partnerships within the community that enable people to age positively and within a supported environment.
