About Council

You may already know the kind of things that Councils do. But it may come as a surprise to you to know that Council does more than repair roads, pick up the rubbish, put in footpaths and maintain parks and recreation areas.

Your Council (a Local Government) is one part of a whole lot of other parts that make things happen in Ipswich. Council is like the wheels on a skateboard, inlines or bike. It is an important and necessary part that together with the ‘other parts' makes sure that you can move and function. You wouldn't get very far on just a board, or with just the handlebars would you?

The ‘other parts' are the Federal Government who look after things for the whole Country such as national defence, currency, foreign affairs, Centrelink payments etc. The State Government looks after things for just Queensland, such as education, health, police, railways, and main roads.

So, the way it works is that Council works with the Federal & State Governments to make sure that things run smoothly and happen for all people in Ipswich.

Both the Federal & State Government have sites for young people that you can check out to find out more about what they offer to you as a young person, and to see how you can be involved in what they do. Visit The Source for information about Federal Government, or Generate to find out more about State Government - but make sure you come back!

Now, back to Council...

Council's make decisions to maintain and improve the quality of life and services for all residents within the local government area. They enforce local laws and regulations. All councils do work that affects both the physical environment (what is around you) and the people who live in it.
