Mayor’s
TABLE OF
Ipswich has a proud past – a
history that covers 150 years as
a municipality and even longer
as a settlement.
When the settlement’s population
was about 3000, 91 visionary
residents petitioned the
government to formally recognise
the township. On 3 March 1860
Ipswich was proclaimed the first
municipality in the newly formed
state of Queensland. Just over a month later the first council
meeting was held to discuss the election of aldermen.
2010 is a milestone for the city as we celebrate our one
hundred and fifty years of municipal government. In this
important year we acknowledge the petitioners for
municipality, our pioneering families and the traditional
owners of the land.
As we celebrate our proud past it is also important to look
forward. Ipswich will continue to be an innovative city, and
in partnership with the military base at Amberley, together
we will embrace an exciting future.
