Message from the Mayor

Ipswich was judged this month - on the ground and in the air.

The city was selected as the Queensland finalist in the Australian Sustainable Cities Awards and received a visit on 10 September from judge Sean Rooney. Mr Rooney evaluated Ipswich using the eight categories of the national awards which include litter reduction and community action. He was assisted in that process by a surprise helicopter flight, offering a bird's eye view of some of the city's conservation estates and rural townships.

Conducted by Keep Australia Beautiful, the Australian Sustainable Cities Awards are aimed at highlighting the efforts of urban communities in reducing their environmental impact. It is certainly a reminder of the importance of maintaining a 'green' outlook as our city continues to grow at such a rapid rate. While we all want to reap the rewards of a progressive, economically strong community, we can not lose sight of the need to maintain steadfast environmental values along the way.

The Australian Sustainable Cities Awards, to be announced in Canberra on Friday 23 October, are one of the many national programs aimed at reminding cities such as ours of this absolute necessity to sustain a healthy environment for our future generations.

It was great to receive a letter from Sekisui House CEO and chairman Isami Wada reaffirming the company's commitment to working with the city and Ipswich City Council. We look forward to working with Sekisui House on this exciting project. The Australian delegation which visited Japan recently reported that Sekisui House continues to share the city's vision for the Ripley Valley. It is all happening, believe it or not.

I also met recently with SHD Services executive Stephen Williams and SHD Services' new General Manager for Land Development Mike Shaw and I wish Mike and his team all the best. I look forward to introducing Mike to readers in the next edition of the ED newsletter.

Ipswich Named as Jobs
Growth Hotspot

New research figures released this month by Bankwest identify Ipswich as one of the job growth hotspots of Australia.

According to the Bankwest figures, the city recorded a 10% growth in employment from November 2007 to June 2009, with 7100 new jobs created.

Ipswich Mayor Paul Pisasale welcomed the news, saying the city was fortunate to be at the centre of major state and federal government infrastructure works including the recent Centenary Highway upgrade and two major pipeline projects.

Cr Pisasale said private investment in major job generating projects such as Walker Corporation's Citiswich at Bundamba also contributed to jobs growth in Ipswich, as did construction projects in the Springfield suburbs and major road projects across the city funded by Ipswich City Council.

Forum Strengthens Ties Between Ipswich and RAAF

The close relationship between RAAF Base Amberley and the Ipswich community was further cemented at last month's official launch of the Amberley Community Engagement Forum.

The Forum is a joint Air Force and Ipswich City Council initiative in which local government and community representatives can share information and raise strategic issues associated with RAAF Base Amberley. It is expected to be a key source of information for Defence and state and local government authorities when considering development, planning and environmental management activities.

The Forum will be chaired by the Senior Australian Defence Officer - Amberley, Air Commodore Christopher Sawade, and comprise Ipswich Mayor Paul Pisasale, community leaders and Defence managers from the Base.

Meetings will be held bi-annually, with extraordinary meetings being held as required.

The relationship between RAAF Base Amberley and Ipswich was further strengthened this month when Ipswich Mayor Paul Pisasale joined forces with visiting Mayors, Cr John Tate from Newcastle and Cr Bruce MacKenzie from Port Stephens, to sign the Communities for Air Force Agreement with RAAF representatives. The new agreement recognises the vital role the RAAF plays in all three local government areas.
