Message from the Mayor

This month expressions of interest have been called for the redevelopment of Ipswich City Square shopping complex.

In March this year ownership of the centre was transferred to Ipswich City Properties Pty Ltd (ICP) following the $45 million sale by the previous owners. ICP is wholly owned by Ipswich City Council.

Ipswich City Square occupies 3.4 hectares of prime Ipswich Central real estate and forms the centrepiece of council’s vision for the revitalisation of Ipswich into a world class regional centre.

We have tremendous support from the state government for the biggest single redevelopment of our city heart since Reids department store was destroyed by fire in 1985.

An extensive advertising campaign in national newspapers has been targeted at the development industry and calls for ideas, investment and construction for the redevelopment of the centre.

It is possible the centre could become a number of high-rise apartment and office towers. Major retail, restaurant and entertainment precincts can also be part of the vision.

Most pundits have congratulated Ipswich on dodging the worst of the GFC. There remains a great deal of optimism in the community and this is supported by business, industry and government leaders.

Ipswich is ideally positioned to become the major regional centre of the western corridor with the backing of the state government’s Regional and Infrastructure Plans.

ED Plan Secures Future Jobs

Ipswich City Council has released a new Economic Development Plan to help secure new employment and industry hubs for future growth.

The plan provides direction to key stakeholders and partners to support and build Ipswich's economic development for the next 22 years and will act as a reference for council, staff, businesses and the community in economic development matters.

It will be reviewed annually and have a major
review every five years.

Does your business have a new General Manager you'd like to introduce?
Contact us on (07) 3810 6938 or email us and we'll profile them in a future edition of this newsletter.

The Economic Development Plan 2009 - 2031 has been developed in conjunction with key stakeholder groups including business groups and other levels of government and will create jobs for Ipswich as the city continues to grow.

Ipswich will play an increasingly important role in the State Government's South East Queensland
Regional Plan with its population base expected
to grow from the 160,000 to around 435,000
people by 2031.

The plan will enable integration and coordination of other council strategies to ensure economic growth occurred in synchronization with the growth in infrastructure and services.

The plan will also assist council to position itself to potentially attract State and Federal government support and incentives to help fund the planned growth and bring prosperity to the citizens of Ipswich.

Extensive research has been undertaken including a series of community consultation forums and more than one hundred individual interviews.
