Chairperson's Message
Among the many events on their way as part of the 2008 Festival of Theatre is some wonderful local Ipswich talent which I urge you to support. Ipswich's own "Miner Chords" will feature in The Parade of Champions on Saturday 16 August, while the Ipswich Seniors Concert Group will present their latest offering, The Wheels on the Bus, on Tuesday 19 August. Ipswich City Council proudly supports our local performing artists and wishes them well in these upcoming productions. It's also great to see artists of the calibre of Pete Murray adding Ipswich to their tours. Each year, we welcome more and more high-profile acts to the city and I'm sure many more will choose Ipswich as a 'must-stop' destination in the years to come.

In this issue...Gypsy Musicians Set to DelightAntal Szalai and his Gypsy band are set to bring some Hungarian musical magic to Ipswich Civic Hall this weekend. Considered the best Gypsy violin soloist in the world and the recipient of the coveted "Ferenc Liszt Award" in 2005, Antal has performed worldwide at all major concert halls and arts festivals. In this, their sixth Australian tour, Antal and his band of virtuoso soloists have put together a specially-created new show to coincide with a new international CD release. Their repertoire not only consists of the Hungarian Czardas music, but also includes classical pieces such as Liszt's Hungarian Rhapsody, Brahms' Hungarian Dances, pieces from members of the Strauss family, as well as traditional Hungarian rural folk music. Gypsies are noted for their sensitivity to music and this particular group's earthy, native energy is destined to thrill audiences.
Come and hear the evergreen traditional Hungarian and international Gypsy melodies, as well as some of the most popular highlights from the world of operetta. You will not be disappointed.

[ Back to Top ] Former Fishmonger Takes the Wheel
Brian Gillece (pictured with fellow cast member Kay Cross) hasn't let his lack of experience stop him from mastering the role of the bus driver in the Wheels on the Bus musical variety concert. Directed by Shay Ryan, the show explores the joys of a bus journey by a group of senior citizens. What happens when the plans for your bus trip change and you are trapped with people from your past? Do relationships, like the wheels on the bus, "go round"? The production offers fun, frivolity and plenty of laughs, served up with a colourful selection of all-time favourite songs including I Only Have Eyes for You, The Very Thought of You, Walkin' My Baby Back Home, Dirty Old Town, The Trolley Song, Goody Goody and many more. The 70-minute show also includes half an hour of pre-show entertainment featuring newsreels and cartoons dating back to the 1930s.
Tuesday 19 August - 1.30pm (Special needs concert 10.00am)
