Pigs

The following points apply to any person who is keeping a pig/s.

  • All manure and other waste is to be managed in such a manner so as not to cause any odour, fly breeding or nuisance.
  • All feed is to be kept in vermin proof receptacles or other vermin proof storage facilities.
  • The keeping of pigs shall not cause a noise, odour or fly nuisance.
  • All pigs must be kept within an enclosure suitably constructed for the purpose of restricting the movement of pigs.
  • An enclosure must be located:- not less than 60 metres from any dwelling house or road; and not less than 30 metres from any property boundary.

When is a Permit Required to Keep a Pig?

If you are wishing to keep a pig on a property that is not zoned rural/non urban you are required to have a pig permit.  Please see the distance requirements outlined above. 

The pig permit will contain conditions that must be met for the keeping of pigs.  It will also stipulate the number of pigs to be kept on the property.

Depending upon the proposed size of the operation, a licence may be required under the Environmental Protection Act.  For further information regarding this licence for Piggeries, please contact the Department of Primary Industries and Fisheries on 13 25 23.
