Poultry
The following apply to any person who is keeping poultry. Poultry includes ducks, geese, peacocks and the like.
How many poultry can I keep on my property?
You can keep the number of poultry as set out in the table below depending on the size of your property.
Number of Poultry - Minimum land area required:
- 1-2 - 350m²
- 3-12 - 700m²
- 13-20 - 1000m²
- 21-25 - 1000m²
- Over 25 - Apply for a permit
For example if your property is 800m² you can keep up to 12 poultry (1 hectare = 10,000m²)
If you wish to keep more than 25 poultry on land (that is not zoned rural/non urban) you need to apply for a permit.
Do I have to provide an enclosure?
Yes. All poultry must be kept within suitable enclosure.
Where can an enclosure be located?
The enclosure must be located at least 1 metre from any property boundary and at least 5 metres from any property boundary that is next to land where the public has access eg. a property boundary adjacent the footpath. Also depending on the number of poultry that are kept the minimum distance that an enclosure must be from any house is as set out below.

- 3-12 - 15 metres
- 13-20 - 20 metres
- 21-25 - 25 metres
- Over 25 - Conditions of permit
Before building or installing an enclosure you should check with Council's Building Branch on 3810 6888 for any relevant requirements.
Do I have any other responsibilities?
Yes. An enclosure is to be thoroughly cleaned and effectively treated with an insecticide at least twice in every year. The enclosure is also to be constructed and maintained so as to prevent the harbourage of vermin. All feed for poultry is to be kept in vermin proof containers.
