Ipswich City CouncilHAPI IpswichWhat is HAPI Ipswich?
Through breaking down existing barriers that prevent people carrying out a healthier lifestyle we aim to decrease the risk of chronic disease and increase people getting active with their family and friends. Through the HAPI Ipswich program there will be a range of incentives that participants can obtain through attendance at sessions. The HAPI Ipswich project is an Ipswich City Council initiative working in conjunction with 4 major partners; Jamie's Ministry of Food, AustCycle, Heart Foundation Heart Moves and Ipswich Hospital Foundation. More Information on the work being conducted with the four partners is outlined in more detail in the programs tab. Why is Ipswich City Council implementing HAPI Ipswich? While the high rates of overweight and obesity in Australia and Queensland are alarming, even higher rates of overweight and obesity exist within Ipswich. Rates of overweight and obesity within district are approximately 10% higher than the state, with 62.4% of adults overweight or obese in 2009. The city of Ipswich consists of higher than average proportion of disadvantaged groups at risk of developing chronic disease including older adults, people of Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander (ATSI) origin, migrants with poor English proficiency and people with disabilities. As these groups have a higher incidence of chronic disease including obesity they will therefore be a specific audience that HAPI Ipswich will attempt to assist. How did HAPI Ipswich come about?Ipswich City Council was recently successful in obtaining the second phase of the Healthy Communities Initiative funding. Through the National Partnership Agreement on Preventive Health the Australian Government has been granting funding over 3 phases. This funding has enabled Council to establish a project named Healthy Active People In (HAPI) Ipswich. The HAPI Ipswich Project will build on existing programs and allow a framework to be established for new programs to ensure that when they are established they are sustainable.
