  • Older people should accumulate at least 30 minutes of moderate intensity physical activity on most, preferably all, days
  • 30 minutes is needed to keep your heart, lungs, muscles and bones in good working order
  • If you can't do 30 minutes now, start with 10 minutes once or twice a day.  After two weeks, make it 15 minutes twice a day and you will have reached your goal of 30 minutes a day.

Healthy Eating

Healthy eating is an important component of leading a healthy lifestyle.  Some tips for maintaining your health as you age are:

  • Go for 2 & 5- try to eat 2 serves of fruit and 5 serves of vegetables every day
  • Drink plenty of water
  • Ensure your diet consists of dairy so as to supply your body with the calcium it needs to maintain strong and healthy bones
  • Try to avoid high salt foods as this can lead to an increase in blood pressure

Healthy Mind

Dementia is a mental disease that is becoming increasingly common in the elderly population.  Various studies have shown that leisure activities that stimulate the brain may help to reduce an individual's risk of getting dementia.  Examples of activities that have been shown to prevent dementia include crosswords, reading, playing board games, playing musical instruments and dancing.
