Frequently Asked Questions

Why walk in walking groups?

Walking in groups can:

  • Provide extra incentive and motivation
  • Be more social and enjoyable, and is a good way to meet new people and make friends
  • Be safer

Regular Heart Foundation Walking participants receive recognition for reaching certain milestones.  For example, walkers who reach 100 walks receive a voucher for free sports socks at Athlete's Foot.

How do I join a walking group?

  • 1. Find your local walking group
  • 2. Phone or email the contact listed for the group to get more information about the group or to ask any questions
  • 3. Turn up to the first walk five minutes before the walk starts.  The walk leader will provide you with a once-only registration form to complete.

Can I try a walking group before joining?

Each month Heart Foundation Walking in Ipswich provides free 'come and try' events to give you the opportunity to try some of the program's group activities, meet others within the program and find out about walking groups in your area, or about how to start your own walking group.  See the below flyers for more information about upcoming events:

How fit do I need to be to join a walking group?

Walking groups are suitable for all levels of fitness, including beginners.

How long are the walks and what should I bring?

Most groups walk for 30-60 minutes.  Please ensure you wear comfortable clothing, sunscreen, a hat, and bring a water bottle.

I have a medical condition, can I join a walking group?

If you have a medical condition that you are concerned about, please consult your doctor before joining a walking group.

There are no walking groups in my area - how can I join a walking group?

Start your own group!  By being a walk organiser you choose the route, days and times of the walks.  Heart Foundation Walking provides walk leaders with free training and merchandise as thanks for playing this role.  Please contact Melinda for more information about starting a walking group on (07) 3810 6666 or email healthy4life@ipswich.qld.gov.au.

10,000 Steps

10,000 steps is the recommended daily step goal for adults, and doing 30 minutes of a moderate-intensity activity like brisk walking (which is equal to about 3000 steps) can help you toward achieving this goal.  You can also break this down into two 15 minute sessions, or three sessions of 10 minutes.

A pedometer (step counter) and step log can help you keep track of your daily steps.  You can borrow a pedometer from your library and register at 10,000 Steps for a free online step log.

By registering with 10,000 Steps you can also participate challenges and win prizes:

10,000 Steps I-Challenges - take a virtual adventure anywhere in the world by participating in these monthly challenges, and be in the running to win prizes such as heart rate monitors and Asics shoes!

10,000 Steps Challenge for Workplaces - the challenge aims to provide an opportunity for businesses to participate in a work-specific physical activity challenge to help workplaces take positive steps towards better health
