Ipswich City CouncilLitterDo you ever wonder, "What happens to rubbish that is thrown on the ground ....?" You may not be aware, but most of it ends up in our waterways. To identify litter "hot spots" and the different types of litter being discarded, Council, in association with Healthy Waterways and Keep Australia Beautiful are conducting litter audits around the city. The results of the bi-annual litter audits will be the basis of an awareness campaign that is designed to reduce the amount of rubbish around our city and in our waterways. Hot spots that have been identified in Ipswich in the first litter audit carried out in October 2003 are highways, and industrial sites with the main litter type being cigarette butts accounting for a masive 74% of all litter. Littering not only detracts from the asethetics of our surrounding environment but also has a detrimental effect on wildlife, particularly ouraquatic wildlife. If a person is caught littering there is a penalty of $150.00 on-the-spot fine. Please dispose of your litter appropriately in an effort to keep our city clean. If you would like more information on the Council's litter program please contact Council on 07 3810 6666.
