About National Recycling Week

National Recycling Week is an annual, Australia-wide event and this year runs from Monday 9 November to Sunday 15 November.  Hosted by Planet Ark over 14 years, National Recycling Week aims to encourage people to consider the impact of the disposal of their possessions and to reduce waste to landfill. It also aims to improve the positive environmental outcomes of recycling, including increased tonnage and reduced contamination.

To celebrate National Recycling Week 2009, Planet Ark is inviting every Council in Australia to participate in the Big Aussie Swap by hosting a public Swap Party. Swap Parties encourage people to reuse items, which in turn reduces the demand for new items. By swapping rather than buying a cotton dress, for example, a resident will save around 22,000 litres of water!

Ipswich City Council is also celebrating National Recycling Week by hosting the 'Trash into Treasure' school art competition for primary schools and childcare centres and will be displaying a series of informative recycling displays in all Ipswich libraries and in a number of council buildings during National Recycling Week itself, 9 - 15 November 2009.

Swapping for the Environment

Ipswich City Council is committed to promoting events that benefit the environment. A Swap Party event:

  • promotes reuse and recycling initiatives;
  • encourages the community to swap unwanted items rather than disposing of them at landfill;
  • Reduces the need to purchase new items and therefore has a significant environmental benefit.

Swapping items rather than buying new ones is one of the best ways to reduce waste.  Reducing waste through activities such as swapping is better for the environment than recycling as it prevents the investment of natural resources in the production, packaging and transporting of new items.

The doors open at 9:00 am. You will not be allowed access to the building before 9:00 am.

Can I bring more than 5 items to the Swap Party?

No. Due to space restrictions, we are limiting the number of items per person to 5 or less. You will only receive five tokens for the five items you decide to swap. The other items will need to be returned to your car. Remember to bring clean, good quality items. Broken, ripped or poor quality items will be turned away. Ipswich City Council reserves the right to refuse poor quality items.

No. Each item is worth one token. The only exception is if in an item comes as part of a set e.g. a set of matching cutlery. In this case the whole cutlery set can be swapped for one token

What happens if there are items left over at the end of the event?

In the last 20 minutes of the event, an announcement will be made that the Swap Party is about to close. People will be invited to take whatever items they like without requiring a token.

A local charity is also being invited to attend the Swap Party and they will take any remaining items of value.

What if I do not use all my Swap Tokens?

Keep them and you will be able to use them again at the next Swap Party.

If I only bring clothes to swap, can I only use my Swap Tokens on the clothes stall?

No. Your tokens can be used to swap for any item displayed on any of the stalls. There are not specific tokens for each stall.  Bring a jumper and go home with a saw!!

I am bringing the whole family.  Do we all get swap tokens?

Yes. If there are four people in your family, and you all bring five good quality items, then you are entitled to five tokens each. The rules state five items or less per person.

Can I take my item back if I change my mind?

No. Once you have donated your item(s) to the Swap Party they are no longer your property. You will need to give a swap token to retrieve your item.

What if two people want the same item?

If two people want the same item, this will be resolved through a quick game of 'rock paper, scissors'. The stall holders will adjudicate the game!

Can I pay for an item to secure it?

No. This is strictly a Swap Party, and the Swap Tokens are as good as money on the day. There will be no exchange of money for items.

Why are electrical items not accepted?

Due to safety requirements, we are not accepting any electrical items. If you bring electrical items, they will be refused at the door.

Can I bring along a sofa, a fridge or a bed to swap?

No. We will only accept items that can be carried in and carried out. Large, excessively heavy or bulky items will be refused.
