Ipswich City Council Administrators Update - Vision 2020 December 2018

8 COUNCIL SNIPPETS CBD development: Initial roadwork about to begin in Nicholas Street Fencing erected in Nicholas Street signals the resumption of work on CBD redevelopment. JMac Constructions was appointed by council in October to carry out the work. When completed, Nicholas Street and Union Place will reopen to low speed traffic and operate as a shared pedestrian zone. Also from this week part of the mall becomes a shared pedestrian and construction vehicle access zone. “Once all demolition and excavation works are completed, construction will commence on installation of the road, traffic light systems and security bollards, as well as all associated landscaping and planting,” Ipswich City Council Interim Administrator Greg Chemello said. “The security bollards will be programmed to close the street to vehicle access each evening, transforming Ipswich Central into a pedestrian-only entertainment zone.” New prototype pod to extend reach of libraries Ipswich City Council will install a library pod – a 600-book retail kiosk – at Karalee Shopping Village. Arts, Social Development and Community Engagement Chief Operating Officer Caroline McMahon said the pod prototype was based on Ipswich Libraries’ successful Market Place collection model. “As part of Ipswich Libraries’ strategic approach of extending the library’s reach beyond customers having to visit the branches, we are aiming to insert library services where people already congregate,” she said. “This will create an original collection service offering targeted at residents who may not visit the library branch but would be attracted by a retail kiosk experience that provides self-service browse and borrow functionality.” Ms McMahon said using established radio frequency identification technology (RFID), customers would be able to browse physical and eBooks using their library card, with the ability to immediately join online and borrow a book also available at the kiosk to drive an increase in membership. Ipswich endorses new code of conduct for councillors Councillors elected to Ipswich City Council in March 2020 will have to abide by a tough new code of conduct. Minister for Local Government, Racing and Multicultural Affairs Stirling Hinchliffe was sitting in the gallery of Ipswich City Council chambers as the new Councillor Code of Conduct was tabled at the council’s November meeting of the Governance Committee. Interim Administrator Greg Chemello said the new Councillor Code of Conduct took effect across Queensland as of 3 December 2018 unless earlier endorsed by specific councils. Ipswich City Council adopted the code at the council meeting on Tuesday 4 December. Mr Chemello said the code summarised the standards of behaviour as the three Rs: that councillors carry out RESPONSIBILITIES conscientiously and in the best interests of the council and the community; they treat people in a reasonable, just, RESPECTFUL and non-discriminatory way; and their conduct does not reflect adversely on the REPUTATION of the council.
