Bushfire season usually progresses through southern areas of Queensland as spring (September) approaches. It can extend into February in the southern and far southwestern areas. Fuel load, climate and weather conditions also influence these timeframes.

Don't be a Suzy. Have a 'what-if' survival plan and be prepared to leave early during bushfires.

Keep informed

Do not assume you will receive a warning as a fire approaches or that fire crews will be able to assist every home. It is up to you to monitor conditions - you may find these resources helpful:

Don't wait until it's too late

Find out if you are at risk of bushfire and make a plan to keep your family safe, your property resilient and your valuables and important documents protected. In doing so you will also help decrease the danger to neighbouring properties. QFES have created a quick and easy postcode checker to help you determine if you live in, or might be travelling through, a bushfire hotspot this season.

Prepare buildings

  • Clear your roof and gutters of debris, invest in and test gutter plugs
  • Enclose open areas under decks and floors
  • Install fine steel wire mesh screens on windows, doors, vents and weep holes
  • Maintain pumps, generators and water systems regularly
  • Point LPG cylinder release valves away from the house
  • Seal all gaps in external roof and wall cladding
  • Relocate flammable items away from your home (e.g. wood piles, boxes, paper, hanging baskets, outdoor furniture)

Prepare access for emergency services

  • Display your house or lot number prominently
  • Create adequate space for fire trucks to enter and exit - 4m x 4m with a turnaround area

Prepare the garden

  • Mow your grass regularly
  • Clear excess ground fuel loads (e.g. leaves, sticks, branches, grass) regularly
  • Trim branches that are lower than 2m from the ground

Prepare yourself

  • Purchase and maintain sufficient personal protective equipment (e.g. smoke mask, sturdy gloves, boots, hat, safety goggles)
  • Keep a fully-stocked first aid kit
  • Have appropriate insurance for your home, contents and vehicles
  • Have an up to date Bushfire Survival Plan
