There are several simple actions that you can take to increase the level of safety of yourself, your family and your home in the event of a severe storm.
Don't be a Mary. Clean up for storm season and secure loose items.
Actions to prepare for storm season
- Prepare an emergency kit for your home - work through the checklist here (PDF, 912.9 KB)
- Clean gutters, secure outdoor furniture and cross masking tape over windows if necessary
- Ensure that pets are inside or somewhere safe, secure and out of the elements
- Charge phones and tune in to warnings on a battery-operated radio
- Get the insurance you need
- Store valuables and poisons well above ground level
- Log-on to the Disaster Dashboard and sign up to New BOM Weather App for the latest updates and information
During a severe storm
- If outside, find shelter away from trees, power lines and metal structures
- Stay inside and away from windows
- Disconnect all electrical appliances
- Park vehicles under cover
- Listen to your radio for updates
After a severe storm
- Check your home for damage
- Check up on your neighbours
- Contact the SES on 132 500 if trees have fallen across your roof or driveway
- Stay away from fallen power lines and immediately report them to Energex on 13 19 62
