Ipswich City Council has completed a review of its Cyber Security Policy to make sure it remains fit for purpose in an ever-changing world.
Finance and Governance Committee Chairperson Councillor Paul Tully said the review was a part of council’s standard four-year policy development and improvement cycle.
“Council generally reviews its policies every four years to make sure they remain relevant to current operating conditions,” Cr Tully said.
“A lot can change from when a policy is enacted to when it is reviewed and that is definitely the case in the world of cyber security.
“In recent years, the digital landscape has remained fast-moving and dynamic, particularly with the rise of artificial intelligence (AI) technology.
“All indications are that the use of AI will only increase in the years ahead as it becomes greater integrated with day-to-day business operations, but we must make sure it is used in a safe way.
“We know local governments and other organisations have in recent years increasingly become targets for cyber criminals and council has been working diligently to improve its cyber maturity, including undertaking a program to increase staff awareness of digital scams.
“Council is always looking for opportunities to strengthen its cyber security to best protect council and ultimately Ipswich ratepayers.
“Updates to the organisation’s Cyber Security Policy reflect the organisation’s approach of continuous refinement and improvement and also better reflect the role all employees, contractors and volunteers have in supporting cyber security efforts.”
