Resource Recovery Centres

Resource recovery centres used to be known as 'transfer stations'. They’re also known as ‘the tip’ or ‘the rubbish dump’.

Recyclable items accepted free of charge

Council’s resource recovery centres accept a wide range of recyclable or reusable items free of charge, provided no other waste material is in the load.

These items include:

  • household and car batteries (e.g. sizes AAA-D, button batteries, rechargeable, lithium, lead acid car batteries, regular solar batteries, power bank batteries)
  • cardboard
  • glass bottles and jars
  • oil (up to 20 litres)
  • electronic waste/e-waste (*see note below)
  • gas bottles
  • scrap metal
  • paint (up to 100 litres in total and 20 litres per container)
  • small household appliances and equipment with a power source (e.g. toasters, kettles, air fryers, fans, irons, hair dryers)
  • white goods and large appliances (e.g. fridges, washing machines, dryers, freezers, air conditioners, ovens, cooktops).

*What is e-waste?

E-waste is any electronic product or device that no longer works or you don’t need anymore.

Items include anything that needs electricity or a battery to work, such as:

  • computers and laptops

  • keyboards or a mouse

  • mobile phones

  • TVs and speakers

  • LED light bulbs

  • toys and gadgets

  • small and large household appliances.

E-waste should not be disposed of in landfill. E-waste contains valuable materials such as gold, copper and platinum that can be extracted and turned into other products.

Important:

  • Don't put e-waste in any of your wheelie bins. E-waste, including household batteries, can cause fires in collection trucks and at council's resource recovery centres.
Items not accepted at the resource recovery centres

Resource recovery centres do not accept:

  • asbestos
  • household hazardous waste (except on free hazardous waste drop-off days)

Asbestos disposal options:

1. Engage a licenced professional to safely remove and dispose of asbestos materials

2. Gatton Transfer Station and Landfill

  • 8am - 3pm, Monday-Friday only
  • Maximum of 175kg
  • Fees apply

Hints and Tips for Loading Trailers

When you're packing your vehicle and/or trailer for a trip to your local Resource Recovery Centre, group similar materials together.

By taking a little extra time to sort your load before you leave home, you can save yourself plenty of time when you arrive at the Resource Recovery Centre. Consider which areas you will need to visit and load your vehicle/trailer accordingly. The last item in your vehicle/trailer will be the first to be unloaded.
