Resource Recovery Strategy

Progress Since the 2021–22 Resource Recovery Strategy

Since launching our initial strategy in 2021–22, we’ve made significant strides in improving waste management and resource recovery across our region:

  • Transformed 70,000 tonnes of FOGO (Food Organics and Garden Organics) and GO (Garden Organics) materials into high-quality compost.
  • Reintroduced glass to yellow-lid recycling bins, diverting approximately 2,300 tonnes of glass from landfill over three years.

Key Achievements

We’re proud to share some of our major milestones:

  • Signed a Design, Build, Maintain and Operate contract for a new regional Material Recovery Facility in partnership with our Sub-Regional Alliance councils, leading to the creation of Greenovate.
  • Launched a free, annual On-Demand Large Item Kerbside Collection service, diverting an additional 1,000 tonnes of material from landfill in just 12 months.
  • Rolled out a citywide Garden Organics (GO) service, with over 90% of properties now equipped with a GO bin.
Redeveloped and upgraded the Riverview and Rosewood Resource Recovery Centres to meet growing demand and improve service delivery.
  • Advanced planning for future Southern and Western Resource Recovery Centres to support long-term sustainability.

The Resource Recovery Strategy is built on four key pillars

  1. Divert organic waste from landfill
  2. Optimise the city’s co-mingled recycling service
  3. Support innovative business initiatives that deliver circular economy outcomes
  4. Have fit-for-purpose waste and resource recovery infrastructure that meets the needs of a growing city
