Seniors invited to have the time of their lives

Ipswich City Council, community groups and organisations will lay out the welcome mat for senior residents and visitors during October as the city marks Queensland Seniors Month.

Ipswich City Council Community and Sport Committee Chairperson Councillor Jacob Madsen said Seniors Month was about showing how older people can lead healthy and productive lives and are connected, cared for and celebrated.

“People aged over 60 make up 16 per cent of the Ipswich population and we know that every day older residents make a significant contribution to our community,” Cr Madsen said.

“From volunteering at community clubs, events and services, to guiding our younger generations through life’s challenges, seniors are an important part of our community, and this is our chance to recognise the contribution they make.”

The Seniors Month program, from 1 to 31 October, is packed with more than 100 free or low-cost activities – from line dancing classes or learning to play the ukelele, to discovering pickleball or getting support to use your digital device.

“We’re excited to welcome everyone to join in the fun, connect with others, and make new memories – because it’s never too late to have the time of your life,” Cr Madsen said.

“Council has partnered with community organisations from across the Ipswich region to once again create a calendar of events that brings people together through vibrant, inclusive experiences.

“We’ll also proudly light up Nicholas Street Building and Ipswich Civic Centre purple and pink to shine a light on seniors in the first week of October, and again on 27 October in yellow and orange in celebration of Grandparents Day.”

Seniors Month kicks off with the Ipswich Seniors Expo 2025 on 1 October from 9.30am to 1pm at The Event Centre, Ipswich Showgrounds, with information stalls, workshops and local entertainment.
