Christmas lights delight record Ipswich crowds

While it was Christmas time in the city, it was not just silver bells ringing in Ipswich – but wedding bells too.
As more than 51,000 people gathered in the heart of Ipswich for St Nicholas Precinct – the 10-night marquee event of the Christmas in Ipswich festival – onlookers watched in elation when a young man popped the question to his beloved. And she said, “yes”.
Ipswich Mayor Teresa Harding said the 2025 Christmas in Ipswich festival was filled with magic moments as communities gathered across more than 40 events throughout the city.
“Christmas in Ipswich is a favourite time of the year for our city and 2025 was no different, with 51,331 people gathering across 10 nights in our rejuvenated city heart, Nicholas Street Precinct, to share in the festive spirit,” Mayor Harding said.
“That’s the highest recorded attendance for our St Nicholas Precinct event and it was a blessing to see the smiles as families revelled in the spectacular lights, performances and market stalls over the 10 nights. Communities across Ipswich came together at more than 40 events, spreading joy to the suburbs.
“But no moment brought more joy to onlookers than the engagement of a young couple in possibly the first proposal in Nicholas Street Precinct. I send them my congratulations and wish them all the best in the future.
“Christmas truly was a wonderful time for our city, with about 3,500 people watching the lighting of our City Christmas Tree at d’Arcy Doyle Place, while our City of Ipswich Christmas Lights Competition attracted 93 entries.
“I also want to pay tribute to the 18 volunteers who helped Ipswich City Council deliver another successful St Nicholas Precinct.”
Economic and Cultural Development Committee Chairperson Councillor Pye Augustine said council continues to support Christmas events across the city.
“Christmas is a time for people to come together, with events providing economic, social and cultural benefits by ensuring our city remains connected, cohesive and vibrant,” Cr Augustine said.
“Council is a big supporter of these events, providing more than $82,000 for events across our suburbs this year.
“This includes $67,000 to community and church carol events in Brassall, Raceview, Springfield Central, Marburg, Redbank and Redbank Plains, plus more than $14,000 to charity and other organisations for community gatherings.”
