A program overflowing with free and low-cost activities will launch in July when the Peaks to Points Festival returns to Ipswich and South East Queensland.

Mayor Teresa Harding said the biennial regional festival focused on celebrating creek catchments south of the Brisbane River, stretching from the mountain peaks of Ipswich through to the coastline.

“Peaks to Points Festival showcases council and community efforts to improve the health of these important catchments with a wide range of engaging experiences,” Mayor Harding said.

“It is a special opportunity to connect with the natural environment, with the Festival only held every two years.”

Mayor Harding said it was encouraging to see local community organisations hosting various events in Ipswich during the two-week Festival program.

“Local bushland restoration sites that are part of council’s Bushcare program will be featured, with the volunteers putting on free community activities,” Mayor Harding said.

“The Garden of Eden Bushcare group at Cribb Park, North Ipswich, will celebrate National Tree Day on 26 July with a community planting event on the banks of the Bremer River.

“The Friends of Smith Park Bushcare group in Woodend will host a guided tour on plant identification following their regular working bee on 8 August.

“Other community-led activities in Ipswich include a guided platypus walk at Opossum Creek in Brookwater, a spotlighting tour at Springfield Lakes, and a guided bird identification walk and Woogaroo Catchment Fair at Opossum Creek Parklands.”
