Free green waste disposal weekends help Ipswich Get Ready for storms
Published on 07 October 2026
Ipswich residents can get storm season ready with the return of Free Green Waste Disposal Weekends this October and November.
Ipswich Mayor Teresa Harding said free drop-off weekends would be held on 24 and 25 October as well as 7 and 8 November at Riverview and Rosewood Resource Recovery Centres.
“The warmer weather is returning and with it comes the threat of severe storms,” Mayor Harding said.
“This week is Get Ready Queensland Week and now is the time for households to start thinking about how prepared they are for natural disasters.
“Simple actions such as trimming trees, cleaning branches and removing garden debris can make a significant difference when sever weather hits.
“Each year, council promotes a range of Get Ready initiatives including awareness campaigns and information stalls, with the Free Green Waste Disposal Weekends supporting these initiatives.
“Last year’s program was well received with more than 2,007 community members visiting council’s resource recovery centres to drop about 900 tonnes of green waste across the disposal weekends.
“These Free Green Waste Disposal Weekends make it easier for residents to prepare their properties, reduce storm risks and safely dispose of vegetation that could become dangerous during high winds and heavy rain.”
Environment and Sustainability Committee Chairperson Councillor Jim Madden said disaster preparedness is a shared responsibility, and it is important everyone does their part.
“Being prepared before a storm arrives gives families greater confidence and can reduce the impact of severe weather on homes and neighbourhoods,” Cr Madden said.
“The Free Green Waste Disposal Weekends not only help residents clean up their properties but also support a more resilient community by encouraging practical preparedness actions ahead of the high-risk summer season.”
The free disposal weekends are open to Ipswich residents with proof of residency.
Accepted items include branches, leaves, grass clippings and palm fronds. Mixed loads and non-green waste materials will be subject to standard fees.
