Please note: Council urges all residents who wish to visit one of its Recycling and Refuse facilities to first check the Queensland Government’s website for the latest COVID-19 advice, as council will comply with all prescribed restrictions. Whilst cash is currently being accepted at the city’s waste facilities, council has a preference to utilise contactless payment methods.

Also please note that approved recyclable items may be deposited at no cost provided that there is no waste material in the load.

Waste Acceptance

  • Both facilities accept dry non-hazardous waste.
  • No food waste or liquids (other than recyclable/hazardous liquids listed below).
  • Food and waste doors must be removed from refrigerators and other appliances to prevent small children becoming trapped.
  • All waste must be covered to prevent littering.
  • Refer to Securing And Sorting My Green Waste Load (PDF, 455.1 KB) for further information.
  • The waste pit (or bins at the Rosewood Recycling and Refuse Centre) are only provided for the disposal of material that cannot be recycled - so sort your waste prior to arriving at recycling and refuse centres.
  • Ammunition and flares must not be disposed of in the pit. Please refer to Council's information on household hazardous waste for correct disposal techniques.
  • Ipswich City Council no longer accepts chemicals and gas cylinders on a daily basis at its public waste disposal facilities due to safety and environmental concerns. Council is providing an alternative disposal option for Ipswich residents with scheduled drop-off days to safely dispose of these items. Please refer to council's information on household hazardous waste for the next free chemicals and listed items drop off day.

Recycling Facilities

At both Riverview and Rosewood Recycling and Refuse Centres there are designated areas provided for recycling of:

  • Green waste and untreated timber: tree prunings, cuttings, branches, stumps, grass clippings and timber are collected for mulching (charges apply).
  • White goods such as fridges, freezers and other electrical items (food and waste doors must be removed)
  • Tyres (domestic sources only - charges apply)
  • Car Batteries (domestic sources only)
  • Oil (domestic sources only) - 20L limit at any one time
  • Steel and scrap metal, including car bodies

The Riverview Recycling and Refuse Centre also accepts the following materials for recycling:

  • Paints - this centre is now an approved collection site for the Paintback Scheme. The general public can bring in up to 100 litres of paint in containers of no more than 20 litres capacity at a time. No waste charge applies if residents or commercial painters have only acceptable paints to dispose of. Refer to for details relating to the Paintback Scheme and eligible products.
  • Dirt and concrete
  • There is also a program under the National Television and Computer Recycling Scheme that provides free disposal drop off points for televisions, computers and IT accessories.  Refer to Recycling Near You - Recycling Computers and Electronics Waste in the Ipswich City Council area for local drop off locations.
  • Materials collected in the Household Recycling Collection Service – All the domestic recycling trucks transport the contents of the household recycling bins to the Riverview Recycling and Refuse Centre and off load into a sectioned off area of the disposal pit. The material is then pushed into the semi-trailer and transported to Council's Material Recovery contractor.
