Give the gift of sign language this festive season

10 December 2021

In celebration of International Day of People with Disability on 3 December, Ipswich City Council is hosting free Auslan sign language community workshops throughout the festive season.

The free community workshops aim to provide Ipswich residents with information about different types of deafness and the confidence to interact with those in our community with hearing loss.

The workshops will also offer information about the role and use of interpreters and teach some basic Auslan signs.

Community, Culture Arts and Sports Committee chair Councillor Andrew Fechner said council is committed to encouraging inclusivity and accessibility across Ipswich.

“On December 3, International Day of People with Disability celebrates the achievements and contributions of people living with disability, while also raising awareness of the challenges they face,” Cr Fechner said.

“Attending one of council’s free Auslan sign language workshops in December is a great way to mark this important day.

“Knowing some basic Auslan signs could make a huge difference in someone’s life and these workshops are the perfect opportunity to start learning a skill that makes our community a more inclusive place to live.”
