Australia's oldest steam locomotive on museum display for Planes, Trains and Autos

19 April 2022

Trainspotters and rail buffs hold on to your timber tongs because a fleet of more than a dozen unique, historic and magnificent trains will be on display at The Workshops Rail Museum for Planes, Trains and Autos festival on Saturday 30 April 2022.

Ipswich Mayor Teresa Harding said the festival will be a great family day out celebrating all things aviation, rail and automotive including the A10 No. 6, Australia’s oldest working steam locomotive on museum display.

“Built in Scotland and transported to Bundaberg circa 1896, the A10 No. 6 has a long history in our state and is an important part of the Queensland Rail Heritage Fleet, and takes pride of place in the museum,” Mayor Harding said.

“The historic locomotive served at the Ipswich Mill until the 1960s before it was farewelled from operational duties in a lead role in Queensland Rail’s centenary celebrations, hauling a special train along the original route from Ipswich to Grandchester in 1965.

“If the No. 6 doesn’t stoke your fire there will be simulators, wooden wagons, carriages and trains of all ages and sizes from the blue Class 1250 No.1262 diesel locomotive as you enter to the recreated Tilt Train further inside the museum.

“Outside of the Museum’s open days, the self-guided tour through parts of Queensland Rail’s extensive workshops is exclusive to the festival and will allow families to take in the true scale of locomotive engineering.

“There will also be more a dozen train exhibitions to explore including a huge model railway, train simulators and the Nippers Railway adventure playground for kids.

“With family ticket packages available, as well as a very special visit from everyone’s beloved Transformers, Autobots Bumblebee and Optimus Prime, it really is an unmissable day out for the whole family.”

More than 6,000 people attended the inaugural festival, and the 10,000 available tickets for the 2022 event are selling quickly.

Economic and Industry Development Committee Chairperson Deputy Mayor Nicole Jonic said the 2022 event has an exciting line-up of military displays, interactive family-friendly activities and a huge variety of awe-inspiring machinery.

“The Workshops Rail Museum will be chock-a-block with passionate exhibitors sharing their love of all things rail, aviation and autos, while timeless aircraft take to the skies overhead for exhilarating formation flying and incredible manoeuvres,” Cr Jonic said.

Tickets start at $5 for children and concession card holders, with family passes from $20, and are available online now at www.planestrainsautos.com.au

“Money raised from festival ticket sales will be distributed to Legacy Club of Ipswich and Queensland Museum Foundation,” Cr Jonic said.
