Division 4 Councillor Russell Milligan appointed new Ipswich City Council Deputy Mayor

28 April 2023

Environment and Sustainability Committee Chairperson and Division 4 Councillor Russell Milligan has been unanimously appointed new Deputy Mayor of Ipswich at Thursday’s Ordinary Council Meeting.

Ipswich Mayor Teresa Harding congratulated Cr Milligan and thanked Division 1 Cr Jacob Madsen for his work in the role over the past year.

“I congratulate and welcome Cr Milligan to the role of Deputy Mayor, and I look forward to working closely with him as part of the senior councillor leadership team,” Mayor Harding said.

“Cr Milligan and I work really well together, and our focus will be on bringing people together while working closely with the community to achieve great results for Ipswich.

“This is also a wonderful outcome for residents Cr Milligan represents in the western and rural part of our city who have never had a divisional councillor representing them who is also Deputy Mayor.”

Cr Milligan said he would take on the role of Deputy Mayor with honour and work to fulfil its duties representing the city and residents.

“I am honoured by my fellow councillors’ trust in me to step into the position of Deputy Mayor in the last year of this council term,” he said.

“This past year has seen Ipswich endure major floods and devastation, and in my role as Environment and Sustainability Committee Chairperson I have worked hard for our city’s recovery.

“I am keen to continue those efforts in this new role.”

Today’s appointment follows all councillors’ decision to rotate the Deputy Mayoralty each year of the four-year council term.

Cr Milligan will retain his Environment and Sustainability Committee Chairperson role and position as Local Disaster Management Group deputy chairperson.

Cr Milligan replaces outgoing Deputy Mayor Jacob Madsen, who has completed his one-year rotation in the role.

Previous Deputy Mayors this term have been Division 3 Cr Marnie Doyle, Division 2 Cr Nicole Jonic, and Division 1 Cr Jacob Madsen.
