Ipswich Central streets get a little brighter with artworks

A walk around Ipswich Central is so much brighter with the addition of 11 new pieces of art wrapped on Energex Boxes.
Unique and colourful designs created by Ipswich visual artists now highlight the incredible native flora and fauna of the region.
Ipswich Central Redevelopment Committee Chairperson and Division 3 Councillor Marnie Doyle said it was wonderful to see the Green Walkable Streets Artwork Project brighten up Ipswich Central streets.
“The results are absolutely stunning and have enhanced the walking experience in Ipswich Central,” Cr Doyle said.
“We know there are important social, environmental and economic benefits to encouraging people to step away from their cars and explore our city on foot, so we hope these artworks give added incentive.
“This initiative builds further on recent placemaking activities by council and the community in Ipswich Central, with the ultimate aim being to boost civic pride and encourage safe, connected, pedestrian-friendly spaces.
“The addition of QR codes on the Energex boxes allow people to find out more about the artists and artwork, creating a walkable trail.
“Council also recently installed a new street patio on Limestone Street to encourage more outdoor dining and commissioned a large mural on Bottle Alley connecting the Nicholas Street and Top of Town precincts.”
Division 3 Councillor Andrew Fechner said Ipswich Central continued to emerge as a vibrant and culturally rich city centre.
“Ipswich Central is the cultural hub and beating heart of the Ipswich community and council is working to continually improve and revitalise Ipswich Central for the benefit of the entire community,” Cr Fechner said.
“The artworks depicted on the Energex Boxes were chosen from 57 entries made through the Green Walkable Streets Artwork competition.
“Due to the overwhelming response and high quality of artworks submitted, an additional 10 artworks were selected to be displayed on the hoarding on the corner of Brisbane and Ellenborough streets.
“These artworks not only improve the aesthetic of Ipswich Central, but also showcase local artists, deter graffiti, improve the walkability of our streets and contribute to the ‘greening’ up of some of our city’s busiest thoroughfares.”
