The Rosewood Library will close for about four weeks to complete repairs needed after a major hailstorm.
Ipswich City Council Community and Sport Committee Chairperson Councillor Jacob Madsen said the library will be closed from Monday 11 November and is expected to reopen on Monday 9 December 2024.
“A major hailstorm in October 2020 caused significant damage to a number of homes and buildings, including Rosewood Library’s roofing sheets and solar panels,” Cr Madsen said.
“Council engaged with the insurer when the hailstorm occurred, but due to high demand for roofing trades, the repairs were delayed to 2024.
“During the closure, all library services will be unavailable, including Smartlockers, Library Programs and the returns chute to allow the entire roof and solar panels to be removed and replaced.
“These works are crucial to ensure there is no further damage to the building. We understand the closure is not ideal, but customer safety is our top priority, and these repairs will make the library better for all.”
Division 4 Councillor Jim Madden said council has a plan in place to ensure library users do not miss out on their favourite books during the closure period.
“Those who have library items due during the closure will have their loan period extended until the reopening, and customers will also be given the option to borrow 40 items instead of 20,” Cr Madden said.
“I encourage all Rosewood Library users to borrow their favourite items before the closure or use the Digital Library to access a diverse range of eBooks, movies, eAudiobooks and more.
“Customers can also reserve books for collection at other library branches. The Ipswich Central Library in Nicholas Street Precinct will be the nearest library, and with three hours free parking, make a day of it and visit the popular restaurants while you’re there.
“Libraries across Ipswich received glowing reviews in council’s recent annual libraries survey, and these repairs will benefit the Rosewood community, futureproofing the building for years to come.
“Thank you to all library users for your patience and support as work is being carried out. The library will be back up and running before you know it.”
